May 2, 2024 Statement from Bruin Entrepreneurs Office of the President Regarding Events on Campus
Bruin Entrepreneurs Members and Board,

As many of the UCLA Community is aware, our campus was impacted by a series of events in the past week, particularly the past three days. We witnessed violence take place on Royce Quad where many non-UCLA affiliates violently entered, intimidated, and harmed members of our community who were peacefully protesting. We also witnessed LAPD advance on the student encampment, a space for peaceful protesting and thoughtful, respectful dialogue. The events of what happened April 30 to May 2, leaves our community in deep pain and I hope that we can prioritizing taking care of each other.

The University, according to its most recent BruinAlert, has moved to modified operations, including classes being required to pivot online, and campus events being encouraged to be moved to remote/rescheduled. In light of everything going on, I have decided to inform event directors to cancel/reschedule events that were to take place until May 8, with an extension pending based on circumstances. This includes the 1000 Pitches Demo Day, which was initially scheduled for Friday, May 3. Other events beyond this time frame are still scheduled and being planned by event directors.

I plan to coordinate with the rest of Bruin Entrepreneurs Leadership, including Directors, to monitor University status reports, both via BruinAlert and BruinPost. I emphasize not only the safety of our events, but also the wellbeing of the Bruin community and our fellow students, staff, and faculty to determine what the remainder of the year events look like.

During this time, as our community finds healing, we ask for your understanding as we navigate what our future events for the year look like. We greatly appreciate the pitches our students have submitted for 1000 Pitches, as well as the voluntary commitments from our esteemed judges and guests. We are aware in our organization that our mission is to inspire those to BE the Next Big Thing. However, in order for us to create that inspiration, in times like this, we must help each other in our communities - helping those who are in pain.

My name is Proud Puangmaha, and I am thrilled and honored to serve as the 2024-2025 President of Bruin Entrepreneurs, UCLA’s premier entrepreneurship organization. As a double major in Business Economics and Cognitive Science with a specialization in computing, I have always been passionate about entrepreneurship and innovation. My journey at UCLA has been profoundly shaped by the vibrant community and resources provided by Bruin Entrepreneurs, and I am eager to give back and help others navigate their own entrepreneurial paths.

Bruin Entrepreneurs has been a cornerstone of the entrepreneurial spirit at UCLA, fostering a dynamic environment where students can explore, create, and grow. Our engaging Weekly Nights facilitate discussions and learning opportunities, while our innovative Designathon showcases creative problem-solving. Our Startup Fair LA initiative connects students with real-world opportunities, and our 1K Pitches, Startup Labs, and BruinLabs offer hands-on experiences to refine ideas and launch new ventures. We are proud of our strong network of entrepreneurs and industry professionals who bring invaluable insights and mentorship to our community. Their involvement enriches our programs and provides you with access to a wealth of knowledge and experience.
